PA companies create full-scale 3D armor based on video game

Combining Creativity and Technology to Make History.

Reading, PA (February 4, 2021) – Verde Mantis LP and TheGeekGrid have joined forces on a groundbreaking project – using 3D printing technology to create the world’s first full-sized set of T-60 Armor as seen in the video game Fallout 76.

The complete costume will be revealed at the upcoming STEAMFest 2021. The project  is already causing a buzz amongst the Cosplay Community as early video clips and images of the creative process have been released on social media.

What is it?

Verde Mantis, maker of the world’s easiest to use 3D Printer, has teamed up with TheGeekGrid, one of the world’s leading S.T.E.A.M. Education & Event Organizations.

Working together, Verde Mantis and TheGeekGrid will use the Mantis 3D Printer to produce a full-size set of T-60 armor. The complete armor will be made up of over 100 different 3D Models that will all be produced on the Mantis 3D Printer, and finished and fit by hand.

A Cosplay Project of this scale has never been attempted using a 3D Printer as the primary manufacturing methodology. Both organizations hope to show the world “what’s possible” with this groundbreaking new 3D Manufacturing technology.

The completed costume will be worn by Kat Mahoney during STEAMFest 2021. Not only is this the World’s First 3D Printed set of T-60 Armor, it will be the first time a complete T-60 Armor set has been donned by a female.

Joe Sinclair, Founder of Verde Mantis, had this to say:

“We’re excited to tackle this project because it SHOWS just how useful 3D Printing can be when you have an application that requires you to make something bespoke. The cosplay community in particular can really benefit from this technology, as they’re making new costumes and props for every major event.”

“Working with Kat and TheGeekGrid, we’ll be able to address all the critical details to bring this costume to life in an authentic way. Kat has a deep love for the Fallout video game series, and that’s why we selected this costume to focus on. On the flip side, Kat would not have been able to make this costume on her own and we’re happy to share our 3D Printing expertise. It was a perfect partnership and it allows us both to push outside our comfort zone, and see what’s possible.”

TheGeekGrid will be helping to chronicle the project and share it with the maker community, in addition to providing guidance on the history and culture of the cosplay community.

Kat Mahoney, Owner of TheGeekGrid and Founder of the PA STEAMFest, said:

“We’re very excited to be involved with this project. One of the things we always try to leave our audience thinking about is the importance of learning via application… a concept comes alive when it’s introduced through an application that your student already cares about.”

“We feel this project will show viewers that a 3D Printer isn’t just a piece of technology... it’s a powerful tool that can help you bring your ideas to life.”

“In cosplay there are traditional construction techniques like sewing, molding & modeling, painting, casting and more…  3D Printing technology is really just the next logical tool for the tool box. This tool will be a great benefit to those who are looking to create costumes and have an interest in taking their cosplay to the next level.”

“As we’ve gotten into the project, it’s incredible to see all the places where 3D Printing is useful for Cosplay. This is a prototype that Verde Mantis created to showcase the type of results they can produce after “finishing” their 3D Printed parts. We can’t wait to see what else we can create!”
